OVERVIEW

Shashi's family have lived on Hinoiri for a while, producing many scholars and mages. As soon as Shashi's talent was discovered, he was placed in training to become a Gate Mage, and quickly proved to be a bit of a prodigy and invited to the largest school in the capital. It was here he met Ravi Falk, the only other person at his level in his age group. Shashi graduated and was given a position at the palace, one that Ravi declined without giving a reason. Shashi considers his job as recognition of his talent, taking it quite seriously.

PERSONALITY

Shashi is quiet, and generally keeps a cool facade, with maybe a couple of sarcastic comments muttered under his breath. He does want to be seen as an adult, so will keep things professional then, even though he might think many adults aren't any better than his peers. He does respect skill, though, so will be slightly warmer to people he sees as having some great talent, though he tends to see other gate mages as possible rivals or benchmarks. Has problems just relaxing instead of working on improving himself.

ABILITIES

Gate mage, powerful enough to serve as the focus for inter-world travel, though he still needs amplification (the Hinoiri palace has a room designed for this) or other mages in the background. He has some healing abilities, but lacks the finesse to do much more than throw magic at a problem. Shashi is also naturally pretty bright outside of magic, and has sharp hearing.

Delwyn (advise-ee)
OVERVIEW

Not even Delwyn is quite sure where Arianna comes from, though it doesn't appear to be Hinode or Hinoiri. She just showed up one day, years ago, dodged his guards and spells and, in between jokes and sarcasm, offered some damn good advice for the young ruler. Since then, her existence is officially a state secret -- given she isn't visibly aging, that's probably for the best.

PERSONALITY

Arianna is a very extroverted person, constantly saying what she thinks. Given her ability to handle complex thoughts over the long term, and understand motivations of adults, she doesn't always sound or act like a child, but she does take advantage of looking like a small child to be very touchy (both in the sense of hugging people and in the sense of not bothering to hide her emotions) and to indulge in things like reading comic books and getting away with everything. Her morality also seems to stem more from the practical than the ethical, though this could just indicate she doesn't see ethics as coming into her job. She also has a bunch of seemingly-irrational prejudices.

ABILITIES
Unknown, but teleportation is one, and she probably has plenty more. She doesn't seem willing to exercise them on Delwyn's behalf.

OVERVIEW

Delwyn was born the only child to the Hinoiri Royal Family. His mother -- the previous Lord of Hinoiri -- raised him to follow in her footsteps. Delwyn also had an intense scientific curiosity to find out why his world lacked magic, when the neighboring world, Hinode, was full of it. He also learned much about the construction of magic-based items. It was then that he met the traveler Elise Connor, bartered for lessons on her strange world and how to use her ship. A legal loophole in Hinoiri law allowed the government to seize Elise's ship -- which created bad blood between the woman and Delwyn's family. With the death of his parents when he was 15, Delwyn took on an unexpectedly strong role as the new lord, promoting the development of the middle class as opposed to the nobles. He continued to pursue his natural philosophy, eventually coming up with a plan to restore the magic of Hinoiri.

PERSONALITY

Delwyn is devoted to his duty -- and he sees his duty as keeping order in his homeland and bringing order to the uncivilized abroad. He sees himself as deserving of power, both political and magic, but also sees power as being firmly wedded to responsibility. He is a very restrained person with a firm sense of justice and his own code of honor -- if you are a law abiding citizen, then he will treat you fairly and kindly, but if you are an enemy of the state, he will have you killed. He tends towards the Machiavellian approach of politics, but there are some means he will not employ -- the killing of innocents being one. Delwyn tends to be a workaholic on his pet projects. He is very focused, and will skip meals and sleep to give himself more time for them or the task of governing. He mistrusts nobles and most other elves, seeing them as trying to manipulate him. That does not stop him from being polite to them -- good manners are important, after all.

Delwyn (enemy)
OVERVIEW

Kai has a pretty short history, despite being reasonably old. Sprites aren't terribly aware of how they reproduce -- new ones appear and old ones disappear, with folklore stating that old sprites become spirits. Kai grew up in the village he appeared in, learning what he could about the world and magic. He was pretty much sent with the cast to get him away from the village. Kai's own reasons for helping the crew is to become famous for documenting the first alien visitors and belief that Delwyn was a right bastard who would kill every sprite if given the chance.

PERSONALITY

Kai is a bit of a blowhard academic -- smart, egotistical and highly extroverted. He doesn't have a high opinion of most people, though he slowly warms to the cast as the traveling gives him something to do with his mind. He's also reverent towards the spirits, seeing them as pretty much like his patron gods.

RELATIONSHIPS
Phillee (mother)
Riki (friend)
Alri (crewmate)

OVERVIEW

Melody is one character whose other version is different enough that she'll get her own page.

In Phoenix Dawn, Melody was the survivor of a freak teleportation accident and was adopted by Phillee as a teenager. She attended a program to get her Communications Specialist's certification and joined SSEP -- mostly because both Riki and Phillee were involved in it, as well as for a love of novelty. Like the rest of the crew of the Ankaa -- her first assignment -- she was marooned on Hinode, and is now reliant on Riki's newfound magic to get them back to the Ankaa and home.

PERSONALITY

Melody is a difficult person to get along with. She tends to brush people off, assume they are either idiots or want something from her, and in general act like a snide, sarcastic, bitch. Once you get beneath this act, however, you have a truly loyal and sympathetic friend -- albeit one that will not hesitate to whack you in the butt if she thinks you are being an idiot. Melody is very perceptive, and tends to notice things about people -- especially Humans and Starsailors. Melody is very self-reliant and has problems asking for help. She's got a hell of a contrary streak, mostly when it comes to authority figures. She also has a small inferiority complex, especially since she knows that her attitude keeps people at a distance.

Melody's hobbies mostly include music (she can play piano and guitar), though she also is multi-lingual -- as much as a job skill as a love for language.

ABILITIES
Telepathy/empathy, minor telekinesis, minor psychometry. In Phoenix Dawn, Melody gains element-based magic. As a part Starsailor, she has perfect pitch, the ability to hold her breath for longer than average, and better hearing than most.

Phillee (crewmate)

OVERVIEW

The daughter of two merchants on the Darynese colony of Kemaryn, Alri grew up in space -- she set foot on her first planet at the age of 11. Despite this, she is interested in seeing more than her home system, and, to that end, trained as a pilot. She knew she would be involved in the family business, but wanted to find ways to both see the universe and help her family.

In the Phoenix Dawn comic, Alriai asked for (and received) permission to join SSEP, both to see the universe and to better understand how humans think.

PERSONALITY

Alri is a very cheerful and optimistic person overall. She's a fan of fantastical literature -- she's mostly familiar with her own culture's tales, but has a sizable collection of alien folklore books. However, under the optimism is the sharp mind of a businesswoman -- she knows what she wants out of life and isn't afraid to grab for it. She's rather practical -- it takes someone with both feet on the ground to build castles in the air, after all. She's also very group-oriented, like many Darynese -- if she sees a need in the group, she'll try to fill it. This also makes her dislike being on the outside. Alri has a small jealous streak, which she tries to keep in check.

ABILITIES
No magical or psychic powers. Alriai has a normal Darynese sense of vision (better than humans' in low light) and smell (far better than humans), and is adapted for the arid planet her species grew up on.

OVERVIEW

Phillee was born on the backwater planet of Nemea, a mixed human-Starsailor colony -- explaining her ability to speak English. When her brother went off to study in the Sol System, a young Phillee accompanied him, and stayed for her own university education.

In the Phoenix Dawn comic, Phillee completed medical school and her residency, she entered service in SSEP for the first time as ship's doctor for a year. She returned to Earth to get a job as a neurologist in one of the hospitals in the Denver area. It was there she came into contact with, and eventually adopted, Melody. After Melody had been sent off to college, Phillee returned to the SSEP service. After a two-year stint on the Whirlpool, she was made captain of the Ankaa.

PERSONALITY

Phillee is a very outgoing, bright and cheerful person. She is also a bit of a scatterbrain -- while she would never let an important detail slide, to the point of seeming like a different person when 'on the job', she tends to forget things like grocery shopping and cooking. Yes, she will eat whatever she finds in the fridge, whether or not it's supposed to be cooked. She is highly compassionate, and will not tolerate physical harm coming to anything -- even an enemy. Mental harm is another thing, and she is quite willing to bend the ethical rules covering use of psionics if she thinks she will save a life or two -- instead of getting violent when faced with a violent opponent, she resorts to the fact she's a pretty skilled telepath. She cannot stand to see someone suffering and considers it her business to help them -- whether they want it or not. She is a nosy busybody and proud of it. She also has a perverted sense of humor and a bit of a reputation as the community bicycle ('everyone's had a ride'). Her main hobbies are theater and music -- her favorites are operas and musicals and vocal folk music and ballads, anything that tells a story.

ABILITIES
Telepathy/empathy, minor telekinesis. As a Starsailor, she also can hold her breath for nearly a half hour, and spend most of the day underwater with the help of her gills. Her hearing is top-notch and she's a powerful swimmer. She also has perfect pitch.

OVERVIEW

The son of a Darynese politician, Riki has a rather privileged upbringing. In addition to being quite comfortable with aliens, he can also speak English, though his accent is a bit heavy, and his grammar is very formal. He is also the first known Darynese with active psonics, and one of only a few trained Darynese psis. Because of the lack of psis on Daryn, he was sent to Earth at age 12 to learn more about his abilities. After getting his degree in Astronautical Engineering at the young age of 20, something that very nearly burned him out, he was ready to see the universe.

In the Phoenix Dawn comic, he joined the Star by Star Exploration Program and became the engineer of the Ankaa. On its maiden mission, an accident sent it into another universe, where magic was the order of the day.

PERSONALITY

Riki is pretty easygoing, though a bit spacy. He is scrupulously polite, but this is more conditioned reflex rather than an a natural trait. He has no ability to read people whatsoever, which he only partially compensates for by psychic empathy. He dislikes being along, though he feels most comfortable in small groups, not large ones. He is quite proud of his own abilities, and tends to be open to the point of showing off about his own psionics, art skills -- he's a hobbyist artist -- and his intelligence/scientific knowledge. This, combined with his lack of empathy, can make him sound pretty condescending. He's rather organized and driven when he has a project, but without one, he kind of drifts.

ABILITIES
Telepathy/empathy, minor telekinesis, untrained precognition. In the Phoenix Dawn comic he gains healing and summoning magic.
